Mother of two and former show-jumper Kate Rowland is a dressage rider and coach. Her horse Oslo, is a 17hh 6yr old Don Shufro x Sandro Hit. Kate’s daughter’s horse is Dude an 18hh 6yrs by Dream Boy. Notable highlights for Kate include winning the international 6yr old class at Hickstead with her horse Rupert, getting a 10 for medium trot at the nationals and scoring 82 % in a freestyle at a high profile. Kate also ranks training Rupert and winning to inter 1 as a standout achievement to date.
How did horses come into your life?

Kate and Rupert have enjoyed many successes together
I started riding at two years old in Australia on holiday then had my own pony at ten years old. I did all local shows then got a job as a show jumper which I loved on the road lots for 7 years. I was told to have a go at dressage as my favourite jumper was 17.1 black Irish and really moved so I did.
Who has helped with your training?
I trained with Anna Ross for many years, and she helped me amazingly with my naughty 18hh Jazz horse Rusty. I’ve trained with Roland Tong for a very long time now and we have won many championships together with my horse Rupert. I’m based at his now too.
It takes a team to dressage, who is in your support team?
I’m very lucky to have my daughter with me, Swanmore Stud, Sue Carson saddles, Andre Buthe, Margreet Lameris, Daniel Williamson and my lovely clients.

Kate and Tieco aka Rusty
What would you like to be doing in the future?
I love coaching and seeing my clients progress and do well. Hopefully Oslo will win a championship too and get back in a tailcoat in a few years.
If you could have a dressage lesson from anyone, who would it be?
Isabell Werth
What are some words of wisdom, that you impart to the people you train?
Training is important, it will go wrong many times before feels good. Have systems to relax the horse when you are nervous.
Your Top Tip
Enjoy what you do and ride for yourself.
What is the best piece of advice that you have ever been given?
Read the horse and feel, always give them confidence.
